History

Every single historical moment is distinct from those past. However, we must learn from our mistakes so that we do not run the risk of repeating them. “

Winston Churchill

Intent

Our history curriculum aims to excite pupils with a growing knowledge of the past of both Britain and the wider world. Through developing curiosity and working as historians, we aim for our pupils to develop a keen interest in the past, sequencing events and making links with the present. By the time children leave Puss Bank School and Nursery they will have a good understanding of chronology, continuity over time and have enquiring minds.

Implementation

Chronology is a key feature within our history curriculum and is deliberately sequenced to support this. As children move through the school, they begin to recognise that different things were happening in different places in the world at the same time. This helps children to make links with prior learning and develop their understanding of history over time. Key historical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited. Through using historical sources and being taught about significant people places and events children learn about change over time and cause and consequence. We support our children in developing an enquiring mind asking questions about the past and giving their own opinions based on prior learning. Children are taught about different sources of evidence such as diaries, paintings and artefacts which can help them find out about the past. This includes understanding that evidence can be biased and show a set point of view.

Impact

There is ongoing teacher assessment to ensure that the children are keeping up with the pace of the curriculum and achieving our goals. As a result of our History Curriculum:

•Children will become increasingly aware of how historical events have shaped the world that they currently live in.

•They will also have a further understanding of History on a local, national and global level.

•Children will develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning.

Where applicable, children will have encountered or participated in high-quality visits/visitors to further appreciate the impact of History.

•Children are to retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning. This is an editor with sample data.
